Installation of my first project for freshman sculpture. made between Jan 23rd 2008 and Feb 20th 2008 Photos (family and thrifted), bass wood, branches, tea stained twine, cardboard, paper. (i've also uploaded details of all the photos/frames in this to my scraps)
our assignment was to make a monument to something that we felt deserved it. Our teacher encouraged us to think outside of the traditional realm of figurative monuments.
half of the photos in the installation I found at a thrift store. I can't imagine why anyone would want to throw out family photographs which is why I had to buy them, to me they just needed a home. So when I got my assignment for sculpture I knew they needed to be in my monument so I gathered old family photos and the found photos and started making frames that just felt right and this is the end result. this is installed in my room above my dresser, which is the ideal place for this piece for me.
comments and criticism on this are really appreciated since this is the first time I've ever done sculpture and I put a lot of time, energy, and thought into this
I think this is really interesting, but I'm a little confused. Is the monument just the photographs, or are you including the collection of candles and skulls as well?
I think it's clever that you're giving homeless [photographs] a home. I don't understand why anyone would want to throw away old photographs either. I really like the homemade picture frames. I think it adds to the old time feel of the photographs.
I wasn't sure if the dresser was part of the structure to, but if it is...It makes me think of like...the dark side of New Orleans or...well, Louisiana. I've always seen little shows, and I've read little snippets about "Voodoo" kind of being associated with the place. I get the feeling that the people in the photograph, although they appear cheerful and family oriented and "normal", they also have a darker, mysterious side to them. Which, most people do, and that's not always portrayed in a simple photograph, ya'know?
well when deciding on where to hang/install the photos my teacher helped me decide on my house and i thought the best place would be above my dresser because it has the feel of an altar. so the candles and things were there before but now are part of the piece because of i think it works well together with the photos and how i wanted to pay respect to them.
yeah lots of things I own have that new orleans/voodoo/creepy feeling. i love it.
